Most libraries in London are expected to soon be shut again with the approach of the New Year.
Tradition has it that most libraries shut their doors on Sundays, but with the arrival of holidays, people can be unsure. This is why most councils have clearly flagged library closures for 1 January on their websites - but times and dates should be checked in advance or ahead of making journeys as it may not always be the case.
It is typical of councils in the UK to close libraries on December 24, 25 and 26. Following boxing day, people will generally find they open at usual times.
They may also be closed on New Years Eve with December 31 falling on a Sunday this year before opening on January 2. However, there are exceptions for when the public can visit certain ones as like with Highgate Library in Camden.
How to check your local library openings
Library opening times can be checked on the Government website by putting in a postcode which will direct users to their local library and relevant information.
Most libraries will allow individuals to return and renew books online if necessary - or via automated lines where possible.
But once people return to libraries there's no need to go local. Some of the best in London have been discovered as the V&A National Art Library, located in the historic reading rooms at the V&A museum and known as one of the most beautiful in London - or The Guildhall Library. It specialises in London history and is the largest collection in the world devoted to the history of a single city. It was built in 1872 and the first version was established around 1425.
As for studying, one of London's best has been considered The Wellcome Trust Reading Room.
University library openings
For students wishing to revise and pull all-nighters before the winter break comes to a close, it is also worth checking which universities are shut as it's no secret that timings for these can alternate more than any other - and across different campuses too.
University of London's Senate House Library closed on December 23 and is to remain shut until 2 January.
Meanwhile, Imperial College London's South Kensington campus will be open from 10am this week until Tuesday when it opens at 8:30am and normal hours resume.
Opening times for other universities throughout London and the UK can be found on their websites.
