When Bukayo Saka's new Arsenal contract expires as announcement 'ready' and next moves revealed

Arsenal have tied down several senior players to new contracts this season and it's seemingly just a matter of time before Bukayo Saka follows suit.

Just last month it was confirmed that Mohamed Elneny - who is now the club's longest-serving first-team player - having joined in the 2016 January transfer window from Basel - is set to remain in north London until June 2024.

That made it the second Arsenal contract announcement since the turn of the year following Gabriel Martinell's decision to commit his future to the club, whilst compatriot Gabriel Magalhaes was the first senior player to put pen-to-paper on fresh terms this season when he signed back in October.

And it would appear that the Gunners aren't done yet as the Daily Mail claim that Saka is set to become the best-paid player at the club on £300,000 a week whilst another report suggests the club are ready to make an announcement that will no doubt delight supporters and Mikel Arteta in particular.

"Part of the plan is to extend the contract of our biggest talents at the club and commit them for the future and we are trying to do that. We have started with Gabby which is good news," the Arsenal manager said after Martinelli signed his new long-term deal at the Emirates Stadium.

"The others will be done whenever we can, but we have to agree on that. I see everybody really happy and really willing to continue with the club. But obviously, we have to meet everyone's expectations and timing is key on that."

Among the 'others' Arteta is referring to includes William Saliba whose representatives remain locked in talks with the Gunners, but for now, it seems that another first-team player is the focus and with that said, here's everything football.london knows about Saka's contract situation with Arsenal.

Contract extension

At the beginning of the year, football.london reported that Arsenal had actually activated a one-year extension option in Saka's contract. The 21-year-old's deal was due to expire in the summer of 2023, but, as things stand, will now run until the summer of 2024 instead.

Saka's stance

Last month football.london reported that Saka had informed Arsenal of his desire to stay put thus handing Manchester City and Liverpool - two clubs that have been heavily linked with a move for the winger - a major blow heading into the summer transfer window.

Although, once again, this stance will have been music to the ears of Arteta: "I am very confident that we as a club and Bukayo, his family, his agent, everybody, we are very much aligned in what we want to achieve," the Spaniard said back in August. "And now it is about putting it on a piece of paper.

"I would like that to get done, because I don’t want the player or anybody distracted while we are in the middle of the season. But those things take time and they have to go through the right process, and I think the process has been really good."

Contract length

football.london understands that in addition to Saka becoming one of Arsenal's highest-paid players in history when his new contract is officially signed, it will keep him in north London until 2028, at the latest, which means a five-year deal has been agreed amongst all parties.

Who is next?

As well as Saliba, football.london understands Arsenal are in talks with Reiss Nelson over a contract extension with his current deal due to expire in the summer.

Despite the lack of game time though, the 23-year-old, who scored that dramatic injury-time winner against Bournemouth has shown a desire to commit his future to the club and the Hale Ender's close relationship with Arteta is thought to be driving him to push for a stay at his boyhood club.
