When bins in Bristol will be collected this week after Storm Eunice cancellations

Last week saw Storms Dudley and Eunice rip across the UK, and the latter caused major disruption to many services across the Bristol region. One of the more notable disruptions was that bins and recycling were not collected.

Due to the red warnings in place across the South West during Storm Eunice on Friday, the local councils took the decision not to operate waste collections due to the risk to the workers out during a dangerous weather event. The warning advised of the potential for flying debris and hazardous driving conditions.

Although there is currently a yellow warning in place until 1pm on Monday, waste collections are scheduled to go ahead as normal this week. Councils will also be making up for missed collections due to the storm.

STORM FRANKLIN LIVE: Bristol hammered by wind and rain amid yellow warning and flood alert

It is crucial for the health and safety of residents that bins and recycling are collected regularly due to the risk of rodents, and even just a bad smell. Bins can also become over-full and, depending on where recycling like cardboard is left, it could even be a fire hazard. So here is everything you need to know about bin and recycling collections in Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset in the wake of Storm Eunice.

Bristol City Council says that collections that were due to take place on Friday will now take place on Monday (February 21), so if you were due to have your bins or recycling collected during Storm Eunice, you should leave them outside tomorrow (if they didn't blow away...)

The council added that all the other collections due to take place this coming week (February 21 to February 25) will happen one day later:

  • Monday 21 February will now be collected on Tuesday 22 February

  • Wednesday 23 February will now be collected on Thursday 24 February
  • Thursday 24 February will now be collected on Friday 25 February
  • Friday 25 will now be collected on Saturday 26 February

The council added: "Please store your waste and recycling in a secure place to help keep the city clean and tidy."

South Gloucestershire bin and recycling collections this week

South Gloucestershire Council says that the collections that were cancelled on Friday, February 18 due to Storm Eunice will NOT be collected until your next scheduled collection date. This means the next week for recycling, and the next fortnight for residual waste.

The usual collection of bins and recycling in South Gloucestershire is as follows:

Weekly

  • recycling (green boxes)
  • food waste (kitchen caddy/food bin)

Fortnightly

  • non-recyclable waste (black wheelie bin)
  • garden waste (green wheelie bin) if subscribed

However, the council advises the following if your collection was scheduled for Friday during Storm Eunice:

  • extra recycling will be taken on your next collection (Friday 25 February)
  • up to two extra bags of waste will be taken on your next black bin collection (Friday 4 March)

North Somerset bin and recycling collections this week

North Somerset Council says that many of the bin collections not completed on Friday during Storm Eunice would have been completed today (Sunday), but it adds that crews will continue catching up on Monday if they need to.

The council did warn that, as a result of making up for missed collections on Friday, the schedule this week may run slightly behind as a result.

It added that missed recycling collections will be made on Friday, February 25.
