WhatsApp trick means people can see messages even if you deleted them

Accidentally sending a message to the wrong person can be mortifying, and the introduction of the 'delete message' feature on WhatsApp was a real game-changer.

But did you know deleted messages can be recovered by using a little-known trick involving the app's notification history?

Well now you do, and as the Daily Star reports tech guru 'Ta Tech Tips' shared a video explaining exactly how you can view deleted messages on your Android device, and it's dangerously easy.

He explains that if you're on an Android device, it's as simple as opening the Settings app on your phone. Then, search for 'notification history' and turn it on.

What do you think of the hidden tech trick? Let us know in the comments...

In a video on TikTok, he said: "We've all been in a chat where someone has deleted a message and you're dying to know what it says."

This means that when you get a message that is deleted later on, you'll still be able to view it through your notification history.

You can do this by opening the settings app again, heading to notifications history and tapping 'recently dismissed' any time you want to see what has vanished.

Sadly, the trick doesn't work on iPhone as it doesn't have a notification log feature, but this might change in future.

Deleting messages allows you to remove certain messages from individual or group chats after you've sent them. You tap and hold a message then press delete.

Doing so will replace the deleted message with a notification saying "This message was deleted".

You only have seven minutes to remove a message after sending it, so make sure you do it quickly.

Meanwhile, the number of WhatsApp scams has soared by 2,000% in the last year alone, according to research by Lloyds Bank.

Fraudsters are turning to the instant messaging app more and more in their efforts to con people out of their hard earned cash.

Victims have lost around £1,950 each on average with the high street bank now issuing a stark warning of things to look out for.

During the pandemic between 2020 and 2021, the total number increased twenty-fold, analysis shows.

Lloyds Bank is now warning customers about the WhatsApp fraudsters and said that messages can seem "very personal".

Scammers do not even need to know the person's name and will often use the pretence of being a family member who has lost their phone, referring to themselves as "mum" or "dad" instead.
