WhatsApp trick lets you read a full message without opening the chat

There is a simple WhatsApp trick that lets you look at a full message without opening a chat - or letting the other people know that you've read it.

Leaving people 'on read' on any app is seen as slightly rude at best, and the beginnings of ghosting at worst. But, we've all been in a situation where we want to read a full message and not reply straight away, and luckily there is a way to do that, the Mirror reports.

Whether you'll need a bit of time to think about your reply, or you're just too busy to reply straight away but need the information from the message now, this handy trick can be used in loads of situations.

If you have an Android, here's what you can to do:

  1. Long-press on your home screen to bring up a menu page.
  2. Tap widgets, and scroll through to find the '4 x 1 WhatsApp' widget
  3. Pull this widget to your home page, and once it's on there hold down on it to enlarge it, and you'll be able to read entire messages without opening the chat.

While this trick only works on Android phones, if you have an iPhone you can choose to disable read receipts so that anyone you're in a chat with won't be able to see when you've opened their messages. However, this means you won't be able to see when anyone has read your messages either.

If you're an iPhone user who wants to disable read receipts, you should tap 'More options' on WhatsApp, before clicking on 'Settings'. You should then head to 'Privacy', where you will be given the option to turn off read receipts. However, this won't disable them for group chats.
