Ears Up and Forward
The ears of your dog will be on end and facing forward which is most likely an indication that the dog is alert and serious. There is something on their attention as an audible stimulus, something outside the window, a stranger or a squirrel. Curiosity, excitement or willingness to respond are manifested in this posture. It happens to be normal during walks, playtime or when a dog notices a strange sound.
Relaxed Ears
Flat, natural feeling ears that are loosely placed on the head means that your pet dog is calm and happy. They do not fear their surroundings and do not feel some immediate concerns. You will frequently find yourself in this pose when you are spending time with your dog, sitting, cuddling, or resting close to your dog.It is an indication that they have faith in the world around them- and in you.

When your dog pulls back its ears (but not too tight), it may either be feeling unsure, submissive or nervous. They may be in need of a sense of comfort or are evading strife. This usually occurs in a new set up, when visiting the vet, or when interacting with other strangers. Combine this sign with mild encouragement and low tone.
Ears Close to the Head
Ears clenched close to the head are a definite indicator of fear, anxiety or discomfort. Your dog might be in danger, fascinated, or insecure. You may find this when there is loud sound, quarreling, fireworks or when there is violence. In these times, allow your dog room and take them out of stress related matters.
Airplane Ears
When a dog has ears that are sticking out like airplane wings, he is normally having mixed feelings; excitement and being uncertain at the same time. This pose can be seen most commonly in greetings, playful times or when your dog is not sure of what is going to happen next. It is an expression of curiosity and a trace of warning.
