The planet that carries your soul's unfinished work
In the system of jyotish, every planet in your birth chart holds a degree. The one that has traveled the furthest, the planet sitting at the highest degree across all seven classical planets, from the Sun through Saturn, is your atmakaraka. The word itself comes from Sanskrit: atma meaning soul, karaka meaning significator. So the atmakaraka is, literally, the indicator of the soul. Maharishi Parashara, whose Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra forms the bedrock of classical jyotish, treated this planet as the single most important factor in understanding why a person has taken birth at all.
