Trump hails Gaza peace deal as Hamas demands Israeli withdraw before group disarms

  • President Donald Trump announced a "historic" agreement for a phased peace deal in Gaza, which he stated would include the complete disarmament of Hamas and all other armed groups.
  • The proposed deal outlines that Hamas would disarm, Israeli forces would withdraw as disarmament progresses, and an international stabilisation force would work with a new Palestinian police force until a new Palestinian government takes over governance in Gaza.
  • A senior Hamas negotiator, Ghazi Hamad, clarified that the group's disarmament is strictly conditional on Israel fulfilling its commitments under the agreement, including withdrawing from Gaza and allowing the establishment of a national committee and reconstruction efforts.
  • An Israeli diplomatic source reiterated that there would be no withdrawal of the IDF from the current 'yellow line' without the genuine disarmament of Hamas, indicating a significant point of contention.
  • Experts, such as Dr Julie Norman from Chatham House, suggest that while Hamas's reported agreement "calls Israel's bluff," actual changes on the ground are unlikely to happen quickly due to political motivations on both sides.
