Hundreds of residents from remote Alaska Native villages are being airlifted to safety following a devastating storm that ravaged their low-lying communities over the weekend. The extreme weather has reportedly wiped away homes, claimed at least one life, and left two individuals missing.
In what is being described as one of Alaska's most significant airlifts, evacuees are being flown approximately 500 miles (800 kilometres) to Anchorage, after a regional shelter in Bethel reached capacity with dozens of displaced individuals. The large-scale operation is ongoing as authorities respond to the widespread destruction.
