What we know about rare tiger that fatally mauled man in Yorkshire

  • A man was tragically attacked and died after jumping into the enclosure of a tiger in a Yorkshire wildlife reserve on Saturday.
  • Altai, the tiger involved in the incident , is a rare Amur tiger. Also known as Siberian tigers, they are a sub-species recognized as one of the largest big cats in the world.
  • Only around 500 remain in the wild, with the majority of the population residing in Russia’s far east. A smaller number ranges across the border into China and potentially North Korea.
  • Altai arrived at the park in March 2025, travelling over 1,135 miles from his previous home at the Norwegian Zoo, Dyreparken, according to Yorkshire Wildlife Park.
  • Following messages from "many, many people", the wildlife park has confirmed that Altai is "safe and well" and will not be euthanised.
