What Todd Boehly said about Thomas Tuchel after Roman Abramovich takeover as Chelsea boss sacked

According to former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel, Todd Boehly was friendly and complimentary when they first met following the takeover from Roman Abramovich. The first time the pair sat down and spoke at length with one another was after the final defeat to Liverpool FA Cup.

Speaking after the 6-5 loss on penalties, Tuchel said: "We had lunch together, but it was in a room with everybody like players and staff. It was friendly and open, a very informal meeting over lunch for half an hour or 40 minutes.

"We didn't go into details. It was not the moment only to get a feeling and say hello. We talked more about baseball, but when the moment is right, we will share our opinions in more detail in the next weeks."

The German continued: "He paid some money, so I don't think he's keen to drop the ambition. That would be a big surprise. I am sure that he is ambitious to build a competitive Chelsea for the highest level."

Then, quizzed as to whether he was concerned about the cup final defeat with Boehly watching on from the stands, Tuchel said: "We try to impress with what we do, and we do that with full commitment and passion."

According to The Times, the motive for Tuchel's dismissal is not solely due to on-field performances. The decision comes after the Blues were beaten in their Champions League group stage opener versus Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday night.

It's said that Anthony Barry, a highly-rated member of Chelsea's backroom staff, will 'likely take temporary charge' until a replacement is found. The report adds that Brighton and Hove Albion boss Graham Potter has emerged as an early frontrunner for the job.

But, for now, the Blues assistant coach is set to lead the club out in the west London derby versus Fulham at the weekend. Barry was appointed as part of Frank Lampard's backroom team ahead of last season and is said to be the 'brains' behind much of Chelsea's success in recent times, including the 2021 Champions League title.
