What to expect at Swansea City in the final hours of the transfer window and likely outcome for Rangers target

Swansea City are not expecting to be heavily active in the final stages of the January transfer window.

The Swans are yet to bolster their squad this month, with the only addition seeing Morgan Whittaker return from his loan spell with Plymouth Argyle.

A total of six players have left, including Michael Obafemi who officially joined Championship leaders Burnley little more than 48 hours before Tuesday's 11pm deadline.

Russell Martin has been eager to add a striker and a right-sided defender to his ranks, and he is also determined to recruit a goalkeeper as a result of Steven Benda's expected long-term absence owing to the knee injury he sustained during the 1-1 draw with Queens Park Rangers.

Finances are likely to dictate any move for a new shot stopper, with both permanent and loan deals being explored.

Any other business is expected to depend on outgoings, and the future of Whittaker is key in that regard.

The Swans have already rejected three bids from Rangers for the versatile attacker, but, as of Monday morning, the suggestions are the 22-year-old will likely remain in south Wales beyond January, barring a late change of tact from the Scottish Premiership outfit.

Jamie Paterson remains free to leave the club while Azeem Abdulai could yet seal a loan switch away in the final stages of the window.

But, as things stand, deadline day does not appear destined to be one filled with activity for Swansea - who return to Championship action against Birmingham City on Saturday afternoon.
