What to do if easyJet loses your suitcase and how to get it back

Millions of people are now jetting off on their holidays across the UK with many eager people already planning what they're going to do.

And this number is only set to increase as the much-needed summer holidays approach.

However while planning a vacation can be lovely yet stressful, losing your suitcase heightens stress, that let's be honest, none of us want to be feeling.

Lost luggage can occur for a number of reasons whether it's due to technical problems with the luggage system or aircraft or simply human error.

Referring to lost luggage as "delayed", easyJet explain: "Since almost 92% of bags are reunited with their owners, we refer to them as delayed rather than lost. There’s a good chance you’ll get your bag back, so please give as accurate detail as you can when you create your report."

So what happens if you are stuck in this unfortunate situation and how do you get your bags back?

What to do if you lose your suitcase when flying with easyJet

If you're flying with easyJet and have left something on board their plane, their Cabin Crew will hand it to the Ground Crew who will then pass it on to the Baggage Services team.

All lost property not collected within 24 hours is handed to the airport's Lost Property office.

However if it's a suitcase that cannot be located, the airline has said that they will aim to find lost luggage quickly with more than 90% of delayed bags being found within the first five days.

In the event they do not find it within this time of a report being made through their online portal, their specialist Baggage Tracing team will contact you for further information.

Once you’ve reported your bag, you can keep up to date using Manage an Existing Report where you will be able to check your contact details and delayed bag details are correct, check the status of your bag and contact the airport using their direct messaging service.

They explain: "If your bag is missing, we’ll ask you to complete a Delayed Baggage Report. To create this report online, return to the main menu and select Report a Delayed Bag. Alternatively, you may make the report in person at our Baggage Services desk in the Arrivals hall.

"When you create your report, we’ll ask you to describe your bag and enter the bag tag number. Please give as accurate detail as you can to help us locate your bag. Of particular note, the bag tag number is a key identifier, so it’s important to enter it if you have it.

"You should have received a receipt (or baggage identification tag) when you checked in or dropped off your bags. This receipt has a number on it that corresponds to the tag attached to your bag.

"The number is often placed above a barcode and generally consists of either 10 digits or 2 letters and 6 digits. If you’re creating your Delayed Baggage Report online, there is a visual guide to help you find this number during the reporting process."

If your bag has not been found within 45 days, easyJet at this point will consider it to be lost and you will be eligible for compensation which can be claimed online here.

The airline states that "the amount paid will depend on the contents of your bag and any receipts you have as proof of purchase" adding that "even if we’ve declared your bag lost at this stage, we’ll keep the details on our system and will let you know if we find it in the future."

Once your bag is found, easyJet will contact you to have your bag delivered by courier to an address at a time that suits you or collect your bag yourself from the airport.
