What time is the solar eclipse in London? How to watch the spectacle today

  • The fullest solar eclipse for the next 50 years will appear over the UK today, with over 90 per cent of the Sun obscured by the Moon across the whole of the UK.
  • What happens during an eclipse: According to Royal Museums Greenwich: “A solar eclipse occurs when the Earth, moon and sun align. The moon passes in front of the sun and blocks its light, casting a small shadow on Earth.”
  • Will there be a total eclipse in the capital? In London, 91.34 per cent of the sun will be obscured by the moon. Because the sun won’t be completely covered, this is known as a partial solar eclipse.
  • Eclipse start time in London: For Londoners, at around 6.17pm “first contact” between the sun and moon will occur, reaching 90 per cent coverage from 7.12pm.
  • Where to watch: Viewpoints such as Primrose Hill, Alexandra Palace, Telegraph Hill and Greenwich Park are well-placed vantage points. Just remember not to look at the sun directly!
