U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) briefly published, then deleted, internal reviews from its website finding inadequate medical care in the cases of dozens of people who died in immigration detention centers.
The internal reports reviewed 33 deaths in ICE detention centers between September 2019 and January 2026. Of the 31 mortality reviews that reached a conclusion, 27 found that care was "not provided within the safe limits of practice" or "deviated beyond safe limits." Three of those reports say those deficiencies may have directly or indirectly contributed to deaths.
