What time is Boris Johnson speech as self-isolation Covid rules set to be axed in DAYS

After nearly two years of restrictions, the Government is expected to announce the next stage of managing Covid in the UK.

Boris Johnson is meeting with his cabinet this morning to sign off the plan for the next steps of “living with Covid”.

An update on the plans to the public is expected soon, a day after the Queen tested positive for the virus with mild symptoms so far.

The Prime Minister is due to make two announcements today - one to Parliament and one to the public via a press conference.

The Prime Minister is expected to hold a press conference in the evening of Monday, February 21 to lay out the plan for winding down Covid rules.

Before that, he is expected to make an announcement to the House of Commons, which is expected around 3.30pm.

Although no time has been announced yet for the press conference, as the pandemic has worn on, 5pm has emerged as a preferred time for the Prime Minister and his team to make announcements live on air.

What is likely to be in Boris Johnson's announcement?

Boris Johson will give an update on the plan to formally scrap the legal need to self-isolate after testing positive for the virus, with No10 saying on Saturday that it intends to remove the measure by the end of the week.

The measure is expected to be lifted as soon as Thursday. The PM is also due begin rolling back free Covid testing.

Speaking on Saturday, Mr Johnson said: "Today will mark a moment of pride after one of the most difficult periods in our country's history as we begin to learn to live with Covid.

"It would not be possible without the efforts of so many - the NHS who delivered the life-saving vaccine rollout at phenomenal speed, our world-leading scientists and experts, and the general public for their commitment to protecting themselves and their loved ones."

Do people want restrictions to end?

More than half of shoppers will continue to wear a mask when out in shops, said a YouGov poll (Adam Gerrard / Daily Mirror)

Research conducted from YouGov data by supply chain experts Manhattan Associates found that despite the anticipated lifting of restrictions, many members of the public are still planning to wear PPE and conduct themselves in a Covid-safe way when going out shopping.

The data found that 52% of consumers in the UK will continue to wear a mask when going shopping on the high street, and 48% said they would feel safer if retailers still provided PPE in store.

Nearly a quarter (24%) of respondents said they will continue to shop online rather than in person due to concerns about the lack of social distancing and sanitiser available.
