What the Rangers pundits said about historic Dortmund night as Derek McInnes applauds 'brilliant' Gio van Bronckhorst

Flying Rangers picked up a momentous win on the road as they blew Borussia Dortmund away at the Westfalenstadion.

It was the home side's 1,000th competitive game at their iconic home but it was one they'll want to forget as Gio van Bronckhorst's team thoroughly outplayed them.

It was the stuff of dreams when John Lundstram made it 3-0 and then again when Dan-Axel Zagadou's own goal restored that advantage.

And while Raphael Guerreiro's wonderful finish did reduce the deficit it was still a result that matched their magnificent performance and put Gers in pole position to advance.

There was plenty to unpack after a pulsating 90 minutes that brought us six goals and more talking points than the post-match pundits could count.

But here is how they reacted.

Derek McInnes

The Kilmarnock boss was blown away by the teamwork on show from Rangers as he told BT Sport it was a "proper team performance."

"We were talking about the individual performances and it's hard to ignore one or two. But it was a proper team performance in the true sense of the word.

"Rangers passed better, they worked harder, they pressed better, they tackled harder.

Derek McInnes (SNS Group)

"A few players had their best game for a long time and it all came together.

"We talked at half-time about calmness and composure. They showed that and Dortmund unravelled.

"What a remarkable performance. I'm delighted for Giovanni van Bronckhorst, he set his team up brilliantly and made the right changes at the right time.

"It's not over because of the quality that they possess, but 4-2, what a hell of a scoreline."

Steven Thompson

And it was a similar sentiment from Sportsound's Thompson who thought Rangers were "incredible."

However he does acknowledge Guerreiro's late strike gives the men in yellow a chance next week.

"We knew Rangers would have to be at their best to get something and, to a man, they were incredible.

"Outstanding performances, outstanding teamwork, four good goals.

"The shine comes off a tiny bit with the second Dortmund goal, because it keeps the tie alive.

"It was an outstanding performance away from home against a European giant. They deserve all the plaudits that they will get."

Kenny Miller

It was one of the best results from a Scottish team in Europe for years and former Ibrox striker Miller meanwhile compared it to Gers' sensational 3-0 win away to Lyon back in 2007.

He said on BT Sport: "It was an incredible performance from start to finish.

Kenny Miller and Kris Boyd (PA)

"They pressed high and created chances. When the chances came along they took them.

"The only one I can think of in my time is Lyon away, 3-0. It's a sensational result and it gives them something to take back to Glasgow next week."

Richard Foster

Former Ibrox defender Foster warned Rangers not to be lulled into a false sense of security by a woeful Dortmund performance.

But he wonders how they'll cope with the raucous Ibrox crowd after they wilted in front of just 10,000 home supporters.

He said on Sportsound: "Rangers pressed Dortmund and forced them into errors.

"Dortmund looked nervous. They were very narrow, and so when Rangers spread the play, they couldn't deal with Rangers' legs and attacking intent.

"Defensively Rangers were outstanding.

"It's taken two quality goals to break them down. On the flipside, Rangers looked dangerous every time they went forward.

"Rangers will fancy their chances of scoring at Ibrox with a crowd behind them. This Dortmund team looked nervous with 10,000 of their own fans - what are they going to be like with 50,000 opposing fans?

"I don't think they can play as bad again which would be my only worry. So if they turn up at Ibrox, we have a real tie on our hands."
