After last week’s freezing weather conditions people have been hopeful that a white Christmas will be on the cards this weekend in Greater Manchester. Temperatures have plummeted recently with the mercury falling as low as -8C in some areas.
Yet as we start the week the weather has taken a dramatic turn with a warm spell forecast for Monday, while the rest of the week will see much milder temperatures than what we’ve been experiencing lately. Instead of frost, ice and snow we can expect cloudier conditions and rain in the coming days.
There is still a chance that we could see some snowfall over the festive period as it turns a little cooler again. According to the Met Office’s long range forecast from December 23 to January 1, it will “remain rather cold in the north” with “wintry showers” possible - so a white Christmas could happen.

The Met Office said: “Early in the period and towards Christmas conditions are likely to be less cold than of late although a north south divide is expected to develop. Temperatures will remain rather cold in the north with wintry showers likely and a risk of overnight frosts.
“Towards the south it will remain milder with temperatures close to, or rather above average. Spells of rain and stronger winds are likely at times, particularly in central and southern areas.
“Away from the north, any snow will likely stay confined to higher levels, with perhaps some low-level snow on the boundary of the divide. Towards New Year, there is potential for a more settled spell to bring overnight frosts and morning fog, before a trend towards changeable but probably more milder conditions.”
It’s set to be a wet and mild start to the week in Greater Manchester, with a high of 13C forecast on Monday afternoon. The rest of the week won’t be quite as warm, although it will feel a lot milder than last week’s freezing conditions.
Tuesday is expected to be a dry day with sunny intervals and a high of 9C forecast, while Wednesday will see similar conditions, although it will be cloudier. It will become more unsettled later on in the week, with some showers forecast in the late afternoons and evenings.
Christmas Day will be a little cooler, with a high of 6C forecast, although it will feel colder. It should be dry through the day but potentially some light rain in the evening.
