Fears Ilkeston has been left with 'nothing' after Peacocks closure

Ilkeston shoppers say the town is ‘average’ and has ‘nothing’ after Peacocks was put up for sale. The store is closed and up for sale and now locals are having to travel to Long Eaton, Eastwood, Heanor, Nottingham and Beeston.

The high street now consists of shops such as New Look and Select. Shoppers said there used to be a lot of stores on the high street like Dorothy Perkins and Wallis but now there is ‘nothing.’

We spoke to local residents on the high street to see what they would like to see in replace of Peacocks. Janice Hooley, who is 59, told Nottinghamshire Live that what would be good for the high street is a clothing store like Primark.

She said: “Something like a Primark - there’s not a big deal of clothes shops, there used to be a lot. Everything that shuts down seems to open as a charity shop or barbers. All we’ve got is a new look - there used to be a Dorothy Perkins but then turned into a charity shop. What would be good is a clothes shop.”

Glenda Kiley, 68, who is retired, says that ‘there’s nothing’ in Ilkeston and would also like to see a clothes shop. She said: “A good quality clothes shop. The clothes shop is New Look - that's it. There used to be a Dorethy Perkins. There’s nothing, it’s grim.

“Definitely do not want a charity shop. A nice clothes shop personally would be good.” The town has also now lose it's HSBC bank on Bath Street, it has been confirmed to close on September 22, 2022..

Another shopper, Charlotte Belton, who is 34, a health visitor, suggested something to do with well being for mothers in the area. “Probably something to do with well-being,” she said. “Somewhere where parents can meet. Where mums can go and breastfeed - to support mothers. Where people could go and connect.”

Tracy Lambley, 60, Ilkeston told Nottinghamshire Live she would like to see a clothes shop. She said: “There is a shoe shop but it’s never open. New Look is for younger people. It’s just average here. I suppose the way I shop is at local craft stores - there’s nothing Like that here. Definitely an older shop.”

People in Long Eaton also previously shared what they want in their high street as New Look closed and is up for sale in the town.
