What Saudi Arabia King announced after historic World Cup win over Lionel Messi's Argentina

Saudi Arabia produced the first significant upset of the World Cup with a memorable performance and victory against Argentina on Tuesday.

Lionel Messi grabbed Argentina's goal from the penalty spot after ten minutes but Saudi Arabia scored twice in a frantic ten minutes at the start of the second half before holding on brilliantly for the remaining 40 minutes to cause a huge upset.

Saleh Alshehri and Salem Aldawsari were the goal scorers for Saudi Arabia, who are ranked 51st in the world, with two predatory finishes in the space of five second half minutes.

What was perhaps most impressive from a Saudi point of view was their superb, yet high-risk defending, with Argentina seeing three goals ruled out for offside with the Saudi defence deploying a dangerously high line.

However, their bravery on the pitch was rewarded as they ended Argentina's 36-match unbeaten record leaving one of the tournament favourites needing to likely get four points from their remaining group stage fixtures against Mexico and Poland to qualify into the knockout stages.

In comparison to some nations, it may have felt like a home game for Saudi Arabia as thousands of their supporters likely made the relatively short journey across the border, with Qatar a neighbouring United Arab Emirates nation.

But for those who didn't travel to Lusali Stadium, the excitement is abundantly clear and there seems to be no sign of the party stopping following the announcement made by Saudi Arabia's King Salman

To commemorate their historic victory, a national holiday is set for November 23, 2022 in Saudi Arabia and having seen how Saudi performed against Argentina, there could be more major upsets to come.
