What's in a Cadbury Creme Egg and how many calories does it contain?

It's the time of year when the diet is thrown out and its all hands on egg.

With our homes choc full of temptation it is easy to just graze on the sweet deliciousness which currently packs every cupboard and kitchen counter. But once the chocolate haze has passed and your bin is full of foil the toll that the gorging has taken on your waste line can be felt.

A main stay of the Easter smorgasbord is the Cadbury creme egg. Whether it is just sitting in your fridge or has been well earned in a garden Easter egg hunt, it is one of the most popular snacks over the period. But what is in a Cadbury creme eff and how many calories does it contain?

What makes up the inside of a creme egg?

There is actually some real egg whites involved and the creme filling is really just fondant (aka a truck load of sugar) with food dye look give it the appearance of the insides of an egg.

The full ingredients of a creme egg are: Sugar, milk, glucose syrup, cocoa butter, invert sugar syrup, dried whey (from milk), cocoa mass, vegetable fats (palm, shea), emulsifier (E442), dried egg white, flavourings and colour (paprika extract).

How many calories in a Cadbury creme egg?

Every 40g egg contains 177 calories and 26.5g of sugar. The NHS recommended that adults should consume no more than 30g of free sugars a day.

This is how Cadbury creme eggs compare to other foods in terms of calories:

  • Two creme eggs = 56 calories more than a Macdonald's cheese burger.
  • Two creme eggs = 24 calories more than a standard Mars bar.

  • Just one creme egg = 11 calories more than a pint of Guinness.

  • One creme egg = 15 more calories than a slice of Domino's cheese and tomato pizza.

  • Two creme eggs = 21 more calories than a Subway 6inch turkey and ham sub (9 grain wheat bread).

  • One creme egg = 51 calories fewer than a glass of red wine (250ml).
