Ramanujan did his most significant work on a slate, wiping results as he went because paper was expensive. What survived went into notebooks. He wasn't working in sessions, he was always working. The boundary between eating, dreaming, and calculating didn't exist for him in the way it does for most people who treat creativity as a scheduled activity.
