What qualifications does Liz Truss have? Tory hopeful's Oxford degree and school 'lies'

The Tory leadership race is coming to an end as ballots are set to close at 5pm tonight (September 2).

It means that we're now just days away from finding out who the next Prime Minister will be, with the Conservative Party leadership election results set to be announced on September 5.

Since Boris Johnson's resignation in July, a number of Tory MPs have been battling it out to become the next leader and now just two are left.

The next Prime Minister will either be Rishi Sunak or Liz Truss, and it's currently the latter who is leading the polls, with the Foreign Secretary securing her place as a clear favourite.

As we come close to finding out the fate of the country, here's everything you need to know about Liz Truss' qualifications and the position she currently holds.

What qualifications does Liz Truss have?

Liz Truss has a degree from the University of Oxford.

She began reading politics, philosophy and economics at Merton College in 1993 and while there she became president of its Liberal Democrats society before graduating in 1996.

Before attending Oxford, Truss studied at the Roundhay School in Leeds, where she completed her A-levels.

The Tory hopeful has spoken about her time at Roundhay several times, claiming that she saw children "let down" there and that there was too much time spent "learning about racism and sexism" and "there was too little time spent making sure everyone could read and write”.

However, her comments have been condemned by former pupils who attended the school at the same time as her.

In an article for The Guardian, Martin Pengelly, who also attended Roundhay, claimed that Truss "is not telling you the truth" about the school.

He said: "If Truss were to say that when we were there in the early 1990s, those buildings were neglected and falling apart, she would be correct.

"But to do so would be to draw attention to the fact that when we were at Roundhay, Conservatives controlled education policy and spending, and how when the school was rebuilt, Labour did."

He added: "We were both taught well by the same good teachers, from whose work I have benefited every single day since I left the school – as I am sure Truss has too."

What position does Liz Truss hold?

Liz Truss currently holds the position of Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, which she was appointed to in September 2021 as well as Minister for Women and Equalities, which she took on in 2019.

After graduating from universit,y Truss became a member of the Conservative party and went on to work in the energy and telecommunications industry for 10 years, before moving on to become deputy director of the think tank Reform.

In 2010 she was elected as the MP for South West Norfolk and two years after entering the House of Commons she was appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Education and Childcare.

In 2014 she went on to become the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural affairs. She served in this role for two years and it was during this time that she was heavily mocked for her impassioned speech about pork markets and cheese imports.

She went on to become Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice in 2016 and was the Chief Secretary to the Treasury from June 2017 until July 2019.

Truss campaigned heavily for the Leave campaign during the run-up to the Brexit referendum in 2016, and when Boris Johnson became Prime Minister in 2019 she was appointed as the Secretary of State for International Trade and also took on the additional role of Minister for Women and Equalities.

In 2021 she was promoted to her current position in the cabinet reshuffle.
