Paul Scholes has rubbished Gary Neville's theory that Manchester United's 7-0 humiliation at Liverpool on Sunday in the Premier League was a 'freak' result.
It was the joint-worst defeat United had suffered in their history and the biggest since 1931 as everyone in the footballing world tried to make sense of what happened at Anfield.
United collapsed in the second half of the game after conceding six goals despite trailing just 1-0 on Merseyside at half-time.

Former United defender Neville was on Sky Sports for the loss at Liverpool and he tried to make sense of it: "We lost six and five in the same week and still won the league, my point is it can happen. It can happen in one season or within a week, it does happen."
Neville was then asked by fellow pundit Graeme Souness whether he considered it a freak result. "It was. It was a disgraceful result, but it’s been out of character for this manager and this group of players over the last few months."
However, Scholes doesn't agree with his former team-mates claims as he said on BT Sport on Thursday night: “The first thing you're taught in these big games is when you lose the ball you sprint back and get back into shape. You've seen five or six of our forward players walking back.
“I don't like using excuses but they looked shattered. On Sunday I thought it was a little bit of a freakish game because Liverpool scored seven goals out of eight shots on target.
“But when your team is giving effort like that and your forward players are refusing to run back it becomes not a freak because Liverpool and these big teams have so many good players that they can punish you if they do that.
“So it's not a freak show, it actually can happen. You can say they got a little bit unlucky with scoring seven goals, but when you see the effort, they probably weren't.”
