The Tricky Trees fought back minutes later through Brennan Johnson, only for Abdoulaye Doucoure to put the visitors ahead heading into half-time.
Had the scoreline remained the same, the Hammers would have dropped down one place to 17th and ended the weekend one place above the relegation zone due to Everton leapfrogging them in the table.
But Johnson doubled his goal tally for the afternoon and pulled the hosts level, meaning Everton remained in the bottom three on 22 points and West Ham stayed 16th - still a point above the drop with 13 games remaining.
