The Three Lions responded strongly and were unfortunate not to equalise when Harry Kane's fierce effort was palmed away by Hugo Lloris.
Ten minutes after the interval, Kane would bring England level converting a penalty after Bukayo Saka was hauled down inside the box. Gareth Southgate's team looked to be well on top before being hit by a sucker-punch as Olivier Giroud powered a deflected header past Pickford.
