What makes bond between Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Tyreek Hill so special?

The outstanding trio of Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and Tyreek Hill have combined to win many games for the Kansas City Chiefs over the past four seasons. During the divisional-round win against the Buffalo Bills, fans got to see the trio at their very best. From Hill’s explosive 64-yard touchdown to Kelce choreographing the 13-second drive to the patented Mahomes magic fans have come to know.

The success is apparent while watching the trio play games and the stats jump off the page from each of the three stars. The chemistry they’ve shown isn’t something often seen in the league, but Chiefs head coach Andy Reid knows how to utilize it best.

Reid shared his thoughts on the trio’s trust and special abilities during Wednesday’s press conference.

“It’s special,” Reid said of the bond between Mahomes, Kelce and Hill. “All three of them trust each other, and that’s important. They have that innate ability to know where the guy is going to be against whatever leverage the defender has on them. I appreciate that. It’s a fluid game, so you’re going to have to make adjustments, you’re going to have to do it with routes where it’s not going to be perfect like you might see with a card that you’ve drawn up. The other team is playing, too, so you have to maneuver around, and it sure helps to have that chemistry when teams are showing you a bunch of different looks.”

Since assuming the role as starting quarterback in 2018, Mahomes has meshed and enhanced the abilities of his star targets. Hill and Kelce were already thriving in the offense with Alex Smith at quarterback, but their success multiplied with Mahomes under center. The former league MVP opened up about his relationship with the All-Pro duo.

“Yeah, it just takes a lot of reps,” Mahomes said. “Just going out there and seeing a lot of different coverages, the good thing about being in this offense with the guys that we have is we’ve seen possibly every coverage you could see. Guys have seen those; they recognize those on the field, and they know how to get themselves open within the system of the offense. I think that’s what you see even on the play to Travis (Kelce). He knew what the other guys had on the play, so he knew that he could do that; he could go down the seam and get the catch. You have to able to not only know what you have but know what everybody else in the entire offense has. That just comes with guys that know the offense and run it the right way.”

The Chiefs head into their fourth straight AFC championship game as the host team sets a new NFL record. The trio was most responsible for the team advancing to the title game last week. They’ll have to continue to put up special performances if the Chiefs are to punch their ticket to Super Bowl LVI this Sunday.
