The morning begins before you are ready for it
You wake to the sound of someone already working. In the Khasi villages near Mawlynnong or Riwai, the day does not wait for you to find your rhythm. The woman of the house has swept the bamboo floor, coaxed a fire from damp wood, and begun boiling water before the light has fully arrived. There is no performance in this. She is not demonstrating simplicity, she is simply not wasting the morning.
