Lionel Messi has spoken out about the "immense pain" he is experiencing after Argentina 's World Cup final defeat to Spain .
The 1-0 loss to Spain, secured by Ferran Torres's extra-time goal, is widely believed to be Messi's final World Cup appearance as he approaches his 39th birthday.
The match concluded with a mass brawl on the pitch, reportedly involving Argentina's Leandro Paredes throwing punches at celebrating Spanish players.
Messi posted an emotional statement on Instagram, saying: “The pain is immense, and it will take time for this wound to heal. But I also hold on to all the good.” He also thanked fans for their support, acknowledged Argentina's achievement of reaching two consecutive finals, and congratulated Spain.
Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni expressed uncertainty about Messi's international future, praising him as the greatest footballer ever and hoping the country remains proud of him.
