The Chicago Bears secured the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft, which gives them plenty of leverage heading into the draft process.
While it’s apparent that the Bears have something special in Justin Fields, there are some that doubt whether Chicago is committed to Fields moving forward.
In his end-of-year press conference, GM Ryan Poles praised Fields as a playmaker and what he accomplished in 2022. He was quick to note Fields needs to improve as a passer moving forward.
Poles said Fields will be the starting quarterback moving forward, and that building around him will be key. But he also didn’t completely rule out drafting a quarterback with the top selection.
So what would it take?
“I’d have to be absolutely blown away to make that type of decision,” Poles said.
It’s an answer that’s sure to create plenty of drama moving forward, as some will use it as a means to say the Bears aren’t sold on Fields. But listening to everything Poles had to say about Fields, it’s clear they’re committed to him.
Also, it certainly puts other NFL GMs on notice, especially for those that are looking to move up to that first overall pick to land a quarterback.
