Pierre Damas Bel, a 20-year-old Haitian immigrant, died in an apparent suicide on Interstate 70 near Springfield, Ohio, on 31 August, days into his first year of college and about a month after immigration officers fitted him with a GPS ankle monitor. His family links his death to the monitor and to bullying he faced from classmates over it.
Bel had just started his freshman year at Wright State University on 24 August, enrolling to study physiology and neuroscience with hopes of attending medical school. He chose Wright State after the monitor cost him his roster spot at Wittenberg University, which had recruited him to play soccer, according to the Wittenberg coach.
