"What is going on? It's messed up": Scenes of chaos as man injured after 'stabbing' near Piccadilly Gardens

Witnesses have described the chaotic and 'worrying' scenes near Piccadilly Gardens after a man was injured in a reported stabbing on Monday night (April 3).

There was a huge police presence in response to the incident, close to the Boots store on Market Street, before a man was seen being wheeled away from the scene on a stretcher and rushed to hospital.

The Manchester Evening News understands the victim, who sustained non life-threatening injuries, had been stabbed in the incident as a suspect was arrested by police.

One witness, Allen Luley, who had been walking past the area as the police arrived shortly after 8pm, said: "Officers were taping off the area and not letting anyone go through as people in nearby restaurants were not allowed out.

"I asked someone what had happened because it was very worrying to see, and they told me someone had been stabbed. As the police were moving people away we eventually saw a man wheeled out on a stretcher with oxygen.

"I go through Piccadilly Gardens often and there are always problems. It is ridiculous what is happening. It's so messed up.

"A lot of people were worried and concerned at what was going on. To see so many police cars shows it was a serious incident. Why is nothing being done about the violence happening everyday?"

Pictures and videos taken at the scene show a huge emergency services response, as officers taped off the path outside of the Boots store. A crowd of concerned onlookers were also pictured beside the police tape.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "Greater Manchester Police were called to a report of an assault near to the Boots in Piccadilly Gardens at around 8pm on Monday 3 April 2023.

"The injuries sustained by the victim are believed not to be life-threatening and a 26-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of Section 18 assault and affray and remains in police custody of questioning."
