What is cuckooing as Scottish police chief issues appeal over criminal gangs?

SCOTTISH police have issued an appeal for information on cuckooing gangs operating in the Inverclyde area.

Chief Inspector David Docherty warned that this type of criminal activity affects vulnerable people, urging those with information to "contact the police immediately.”

He said: “We work with partners to identify and protect vulnerable people who are being exploited by criminals linked to drugs."

According to the Greenock Telegraph, he added: "Anyone with information related to cuckooing is encouraged to contact the police immediately.”

What is cuckooing amid the police appeal?

In essence, cuckooing sees criminal gangs take over vulnerable people's homes or properties to use them as a base for illegal activity. This could include drug dealing or production, or sex work.

Discussing the act, Chief Inspector David Docherty said this form of criminality also helps criminals "to evade the attention of police".

According to The Salvation Army, cuckooing often involves "financial, physical, mental and emotional abuse of the vulnerable resident".

Just like other forms of criminal exploitation, victims of cuckooing are not always held captive by physical restraints.

Criminal groups will often use psychological tactics such as threats, manipulation and lies to isolate victims, making them feel worthless or alone.

Intimidation and violence may also be employed to control the victim, securing silence and compliance.

Those with any information about cuckooing activity in their area should contact police immediately.
