The doorway education
You didn't sit in a classroom for this lesson. You stood in a doorway, or at the edge of the dining table, or behind your mother's sari, and you watched. The way she handed back a glass because it had a smudge. The way she said the cook's name, or didn't say it, just spoke in his direction. The way she waited for an answer and then looked away before it finished. You were four, maybe five. You filed none of this consciously. But you filed all of it.
