Manchester City extended their lead at the top of the Premier League table to four points with a 2-1 victory over Leeds albeit not without late drama.
The Blues went into half-time with a two-goal lead thanks to a brace from captain Ilkay Gundogan. Phil Foden won a penalty with six minutes to go, presenting Gunodgan the chance to net his first career hat-trick.
The German smashed his spot kick against the post before Leeds went straight up to the other end to grab a goal back through Rodrigo. City managed to hold on for the three points, though, to keep the treble dream alive.

Gundogan heads off
After the penalty miss, Pep Guardiola was furious that Gundogan had taken over the responsibility from usual taker Erling Haaland. He left Haaland in no doubt about the fact that he should have been the one to take the spot kick.
Gundogan was taken off with a few minutes to go and there was no handshake from his manager. Moments after the full-time whistle, the skipper was seen heading quickly down the tunnel, choosing not to slap hands with those on the pitch post-game.
Guardiola chastises City’s early play
The Blues boss was seen demanding more of his players in the early embers of the first-half too. It should be noted that he was as delighted as ever when both of Gundogan’s first-half goals went in.
But minutes before his 19th-minute opener, Guardiola was remonstrating with his players for their sloppy play after a loose pass from Kevin De Bruyne. City soon straightened their back and found the breakthrough.
Gundogan’s pre-match speech
Aside from his late blunder, Gundogan played a terrific game. He roused his teammates in a pre-match huddle, with the Sky cameras capturing what he told his teammates in a final message.
He said: “Come on boys, today we need intensity and high pressing. They’re going to be nervous. We need to do everything to win this game, we’re not allowed to do any mistakes. From the start, rhythm - come on!”
Sam Allardyce’s pre-kick-off comment
This was Sam Allardyce's first Leeds outing since his appointment in what was a baptism-of-fire fixture. The former England boss created headlines with his press conference headlines when he said he was on the same tactical level as Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp.
Allardyce has played City on a number of occasions but has lost each time he has visited the Etihad while Guardiola has been in charge of City. When he took the touchline, the 68-year-old simply remarked: “Here we are again”.
