What happened to UEFA's 50 best young players to watch for 2018 five years on

Five years on from releasing their '50 for the future' list, UEFA can be content with their success rate on naming the ones to watch.

The governing body gathered a team of reporters to decide who should feature among the best young players to watch out for ahead of the 2018/2019 season. The 50 contains league winners, Champions League winners and European Championship winners.

Not everyone on the list has hit those heights though, with several stars failing to reach the heights expected of them. Here, Mirror Football looks at what happened to all 50 players named in UEFA's '50 for the future'.

Ethan Ampadu

At the time, Ethan Ampadu had just made his debut for Chelsea, but he has spent four of the past five years out on loan. Ampadu is currently on loan at Serie A side Spezia, making 11 appearances so far this season.

Though he has not broken through at Chelsea, Ampadu has become a regular for Wales on the international stage. He featured in all three of the Dragons' games at the World Cup as they exited in the group stage.

Houssem Aouar

Houssem Aouar has frequently been a transfer target of Arsenal's since he was named in the list. The midfielder has stayed at Lyon though, becoming captain of the French side, though his contract will expire at the end of the season.

Jann-Fiete Arp

Jann-Fiete Arp has endured some fall from grace since being named in the list, though he did earn a move to Bayern Munich in 2019. Having failed to make a senior appearance at Bayern, he joined 2.Bundesliga side Holstein Kiel on a free transfer in the summer.

Kepa Arrizabalaga

Kepa earned a world-record move to Chelsea soon after appearing in UEFA's '50 for the future' list. A disappointing two years saw him lose his place in their team to Edouard Mendy, though he now appears to have regained the number one spot under Graham Potter.

Leon Bailey

Winger Leon Bailey spent three more years at Bayer Leverkusen before completing a £30m move to Aston Villa in the summer of 2021. He has since become a regular for the Premier League side, scoring five goals in all competitions.

Nicolo Barella

Nicolo Barella's talent was quickly recognised by Europe's top teams and he joined Inter Milan in 2019. He is a key player for the Serie A side, winning the league title and the Coppa Italia with them, and helped Italy to win Euro 2020.

Fyodor Chalov

Fyodor Chalov has failed to live up to his potential since being named on the UEFA list. He has spent most of that time at CSKA Moscow, with a brief six-month spell at Swiss side FC Basel last season.

Sander Berge

Sander Berge remains one of Europe's highest-rated midfielders, though he is currently at Championship side Sheffield United. The 24-year-old is a key player for the Blades, who are second in the table, though he did receive interest from Liverpool in 2021.

Federico Chiesa

Federico Chiesa has more than fulfilled his potential since being included on the list, joining Juventus in 2020. He won the Coppa Italia in 2021, as well as playing a key role as Italy won Euro 2020, though saw his progress cruelly stunted by a ruptured ACL in January 2022.

Ante Coric

After joining Roma just before being named on the list, expectations were high for Ante Coric. But he has played just three times for the Serie A side, instead spending his time out on loan at the likes of Almeria, VVV-Venlo and Zurich.

Frenkie de Jong

A year after being named as one of the 50 hottest prospects, Frenkie de Jong would join Barcelona for more than £65m. He has since won the Copa del Rey and been named the Dutch footballer of the year, as well as becoming a key player for the Netherlands.

Matthijs de Ligt

De Jong's international teammate Matthijs de Ligt also left Ajax as soon as he was included on the list. After a difficult three years at Juventus, despite winning Serie A in his first season, he joined Bayern Munich in July.

Emmanuel Dennis

After impressing for Club Brugge, Emmanuel Dennis joined Watford ahead of last season, going on to win the Premier League Player of the Month award for November. Dennis was bought by Nottingham Forest in August, with the attacker being a regular since then.

Mikkel Duelund

Three months after being named on the list, Mikkel Duelund joined Dynamo Kyiv. After winning the Ukrainian Premier League and the Ukrainian Cup, Duelund joined NEC Nijmegen on loan last season, staying with the Dutch side for this campaign.

Martin Graiciar

One of the most unfortunate falls from grace belongs to Martin Graiciar, who was at Fiorentina when the list was published. He joined Canadian side York United on a free transfer in January but saw his contract mutually terminated soon after.

Amine Gouiri

Amine Gouiri's star has not burned quite as bright as some of his fellow players on this list. But he has still enjoyed a solid career in France, spending two years at Nice before signing a long-term deal to join Rennes in the summer.

Luka Jovic

Luka Jovic has finally got his career back on track after it stalled following an ill-advised move to Real Madrid. He is now at Fiorentina, already scoring eight times this season for the Serie A side.

David Hancko

Centre-back David Hancko joined Fiorentina a month after being named among these 50 players. He then moved to Sparta Prague, winning the Czech Cup in 2020 before joining Feyenoord on a free transfer in August.

Amine Harit

Amine Harit now turns out for Ligue 1 side Marseille after leaving Schalke in 2021, though he is yet to score in the French top-flight this season. He earned a call-up to the Morocco team for this year's World Cup, though a knee injury ruled him out of the tournament.

Another who has seen his career fail to take off is Ivan Ignatyev, who remains in Russia with Lokomotiv Moscow, without having won a trophy since being named in the list.

Kirill Kirilenko

Kirill Kirilenko's career has descended into nomadism since his inclusion in the '50 to watch' list. Though he won the Belorussia Cup with BATE Borisov in 2020, he is now at FC Brasov, who play in the second tier of Romanian football.

Justin Kluivert

Justin Kluivert joined Roma just after being included in the UEFA list and his time at the Stadio Olimpico started brightly. But his time in Italy took a downturn and he is now on loan at La Liga side Valencia.

Malcom

Malcom's career has nosedived from the lofty heights of joining Barcelona just after the list was published. He was a flop at the Nou Camp and joined Zenit St Petersburg a year later, where he remains today.

Dennis Man

Dennis Man's career has progressed steadily over the last five years, winning the Cupa Romaniei and being crowned the Romanian Footballer of the Year in 2020. He then became Romania's most expensive-ever player when he joined Parma, where he continues to star, albeit in Serie B.

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic

Roland Sallai

Roland Sallai has enjoyed a solid if unspectacular career over the past five years. He joined SC Freiburg in 2018 and remains at the Bundesliga side, though England fans will remember him for scoring twice against the Three Lions for Hungary in June.

Jadon Sancho

Jadon Sancho's star was bright as he won the DFB Pokal with Borussia Dortmund in 2020. He then joined Manchester United for £75m but has seen his form disappear since the move and is currently out of favour under Erik ten Hag.

Mile Svilar continued to impress for Benfica after being named on the list before joining Roma in the summer, though he has failed to break into their team past Rui Patricio.

Kieran Tierney

The left-back completed a blockbuster move to Arsenal and was touted as a future Gunners captain. But injuries and the arrival of Oleksandr Zinchenko has restricted his game-time over this season.

Lucas Torreira

Another player who ended up at Arsenal, Lucas Torreira soon became an outcast after Mikel Arteta's arrival. He was allowed to join Galatasaray in the summer just gone, with his early potential at Arsenal fading.

Ferran Torres

After breaking through at Manchester City, Ferran Torres soon attracted the eye of Barcelona. He joined the La Liga side in January and has become a key player for both Barca and the Spanish national side.

Viktor Tsyhankov
