What happened to John Travolta? Internet in disbelief over 72-year-old actor's appearance

John Travolta surprised fans with a striking new appearance at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, where he was honoured with a lifetime achievement Palme d'Or for his contribution to cinema. The actor attended the event alongside his daughter, Ella Travolta, and quickly became the centre of attention on social media.

Dressed in a cream beret, tinted round glasses, and a neatly styled beard and moustache, Travolta’s transformed appearance sparked intense reactions online. Several users on X said they could “barely recognise” the Hollywood star, while others praised how youthful and energetic he looked for his age.

“What happened to Travolta? I’ve seen people 20 years younger than him already walking with a cane. He has the mobility of a 40-year-old man,” one user wrote on X.

Another commented, “John Travolta, 72, looks unrecognizable at Cannes.”

A third user added, “How the hell does he manage to look so young?”

Some reactions also drifted into bizarre conspiracy theories, with one X user jokingly claiming the actor looked like a “clone,” referencing internet rumours often associated with celebrities.

The veteran actor received the honorary award ahead of the screening of his latest project, Propeller One-Way Night Coach, which also marks his feature directorial debut. According to social media posts from the event, Travolta dedicated the film to his late wife, Kelly Preston, and his late son, Jett Travolta. A tribute to his family was reportedly included in the film’s reel presentation.

In recent years, Travolta has largely stayed away from the spotlight and focused on family life following major personal losses. Kelly Preston died in 2020 after battling breast cancer, while his eldest son Jett passed away in 2009 after suffering a seizure at the age of 16. The actor now shares a close relationship with Ella and his younger son, Benjamin.

Despite personal setbacks, John Travolta remains one of Hollywood’s most recognisable stars. He first rose to fame in the 1970s through the TV show Welcome Back, Kotter before becoming a global sensation with blockbuster films like Saturday Night Fever and Grease. After a slowdown in the 1980s, he made a celebrated comeback when Quentin Tarantino cast him in Pulp Fiction, reviving his career as a leading Hollywood actor.

Over the decades, Travolta has also starred in films such as Face/Off, Get Shorty, and Hairspray, cementing his place as one of the industry’s enduring stars.
