What happened in The Secrets She Keeps series one? BBC kidnap thriller returns for second run

Two years on from enthralling millions of viewers week in, week out, thriller The Secrets She Keeps returned to BBC last weekend and continues on Saturday night.

However, news that the tense drama was coming back to TV left many people facing the same problem; they couldn't remember what happened last time round. Set in Australia, The Secrets She Keeps , inspired by a real life kidnap in the UK, made its debut on BBC1 back in the summer of 2020.

News that it was returning to screens came as a bit of a shock to viewers and then, as they saw how imminent the premiere of series 2, they tried to remember how it all unfolded last time, with many failing to recall the ins and outs of the plot and how things ended.

The cast of The Secret She Keeps is led by a very familiar faces, Downtown Abbey's Laura Carmichael and if you need a recap on what went down first time round, look no further.

What happened in Secret She Keeps series one?

A teaser for The Secrets She Keeps series one read: "Everyone has an idea of what their 'perfect' life is. For Agatha, it's Meghan Shaughnessy's.

"These two women from two vastly different walks of life hold one thing in common - explosive secrets that could destroy everything they hold dear. Both will risk everything to conceal the truth, but their worlds are about to collide in one shocking act that cannot be undone."

Elaborating on that, Agatha, played by Downtown icon Laura, became obsessed with influencer Meghan, who runs a 'mummy' blog. Meghan was expecting a child, while Agatha was faking her own pregnancy, struggling to come to terms with the demons of her own past.

After getting closer to Megan with a clear ulterior motive in mind, Agatha becomes more and more obsessed with her life and ends up plotting to steal Megan's newborn baby, Ben, from hospital, something she ends up going through with, after disguising herself and managing to gain access to the maternity ward to take the child.

Stolen from hospital shortly after being born and without the required medical attention, the little boy became ill, with Agatha refusing to take him to the doctors. It came to light that Agatha had given birth to a stillborn baby daughter and given up another child for adoption, as well as being linked to three previous baby abductions.

With Agatha also lying to her boyfriend Hayden, there was a tense conclusion and, after coming face to face with Megan, Agatha is left in the sights of police, with viewers left wondering if she'd killed herself after a shot sounded as she held a gun to her head.

Aside from baby Ben being snatched, Megan's life was far from perfect, with husband Jack having an affair and she also betraying him by having her own affair with a man named Simon.

Simon demanded a paternity test and, in an attempt to keep her indiscretions secret, Megan swapped baby Ben's DNA swab with one taken from one of her other children.

Rather than killing herself, Agatha had been shot in the arm by police and was seen being put behind bars before credits rolled.

All up to speed? Well a preview for episode two of The Secrets She Keep series 2 reads: "Old secrets threaten to re-emerge and ruin lives once again, as Jack’s former affair with Rhea comes back to haunt him, while Gemma’s and Simon’s blossoming relationship makes Meghan uncomfortable in more ways than one. Agatha orchestrates subterfuge while in prison, playing dangerous power games with guards, fellow inmates and the prison’s authorities."
