About 9% of Americans were uninsured in 2020 – an increase of about one percentage point from 2019.
According to the Census Bureau, an individual is considered uninsured if they do not have a qualifying health care plan[1] for at least some portion of the year. While the uninsured rate is down from its peak of 16.3% in 2010, there are still segments of the population with lower rates of insurance coverage than the national total.
