It’s well known that Snoop Dogg is good on the mic—just ask his three Billboard number one hits and 1993 album Doggystyle, which recently scored a nod in Apple Music’s 100 best albums of all time. However, what you may not know is that the rapper’s talents traverse the world of commentary, too.
The hitmaker has gone viral following an appearance at the US Olympic trials for track and field events at the weekend. Not only did Snoop hit the track himself (sporting a custom bib and Kobe Bryant shirt for a 200m run, no less) but he took to the mic to commentate as some athletes were competing.
In a clip posted by The Shade Room, the musician says during the steeplechase event, “What we’re ’bout to see right now, they ’bout to get to dipping, ripping, riding, slipping, and hopefully not swallowing jump over this hurdle.”
Sporting his signature sunglasses, as competitors encountered a puddle of water the rapper added, “Uh, in the water, get up outta there! Oh, they coming behind him seven, eight deep like horses. I love it.”
Snoop also joked, ““Oh, he jumped on the top of the hurdle. You can do that? That was a cool trick right there. I liked that one. He went off the tippy top.”
Snoop is further set to commentate at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. He will offer his humour for NBC and Peacock’s Olympic coverage, and “explore the city’s iconic landmarks, attend Olympic competitions and events, and visit with the athletes, their friends, and families,” according to a press release.
“I grew up watching the Olympics and am thrilled to see the incredible athletes bring their A-game to Paris. It’s a celebration of skill, dedication, and the pursuit of greatness,” Snoop said. “We’re going to have some amazing competitions and, of course, I will be bringing that Snoop style to the mix. It’s going to be the most epic Olympics ever, so stay tuned, and keep it locked. Let’s elevate, celebrate, and make these games unforgettable, smoke the competition, and may the best shine like gold. Peace and Olympic LOVE, ya dig?”
Snoop previously co-hosted Olympic Highlights with Kevin Hart & Snoop Dogg, offering sideways takes on the 2020 Tokyo Olympics alongside friend and comedian Kevin Hart.
As with the recent steeplechase commentary (FYI, steeplechase is sort of like hurdles, except with water involved), he went viral thanks to his hilarious reaction to the Olympic dressage.
