What everyone must have ready at home before Storm Eunice brings extreme weather to Leeds

Storm Eunice is set to touch down in Yorkshire on Friday just days after Storm Dudley wreaked havoc.

A rare red weather warning has been issued by the Met Office, with the forecaster warning of a potential danger to life from 100mph winds as well as travel disruption.

Northern Powergrid has confirmed that 20,000 households have been hit with power cuts and more could be on the way.

Now households are being warned to make sure they have these key items at home ready for the storm to touch down, according to Axa Life Insurance and the Met Office.

Keep an emergency kit on hand

This could be especially useful if stormy weather results in a power cut. Basic items to prepare include:

  • A list of emergency contact numbers
  • Home insurance documents
  • Battery powered or wind-up torches
  • Non-perishable food supplies (fridges and freezers don't work in a power cut!)
  • Drinking water
  • Blankets and warm clothing
  • Instructions on how to safely turn off your power, water and gas (i.e. where stoppers and switches are)
  • A first aid kit
  • Charged battery packs for phones (it's a good idea to charge them now ready)
Before the storm - How to prepare your home
  • Secure loose objects such as ladders, garden furniture or anything else that could be blown into windows and other glazing and break them
  • Close and securely fasten doors and windows, particularly those on the windward side of the house, and especially large doors such as those on garages
  • Park vehicles in a garage, if available; otherwise keep them clear of buildings, trees, walls and fences
  • Close and secure loft trapdoors with bolts, particularly if roof pitch is less than 30°
  • If the house is fitted with storm shutters over the windows then ensure that these are closed and fastened
  • If chimney stacks are tall and in poor condition, move beds away from areas directly below them
  • Get rid of overhanging, loose or dead branches to help prevent damage in windy weather. Always consult a tree surgeon and your local authority to ensure the work is carried out safely and that affected trees aren’t protected.
  • Where possible, park your car in a garage to keep it safe from trees and other objects uprooted by stormy weather.
The Storm Eunice red weather warning and forecast

The Met Office is warning people to expect 'significant disruption and dangerous conditions' due to the extreme strength of the wind in these areas on Friday.

People are being urged to expect dangerous flying debris, damages to homes and buildings, with "roofs blown off and power lines brought down".

Transport of all kinds is highly likely to be affected as roads and railway could be forced to close, and power cuts are also expected.

People are warned to stay away from the sea, which may throw large waves and material onto sea fronts nearby.

Some coastal properties could also be flooded and more uprooted trees are also likely in this area.

There is an amber warning for wind in place tomorrow for much of the south and Midlands of England, and a yellow warning in the North and much of Scotland.

Some areas in the North and Scotland can also potentially expect snow on Friday.
