What Everton ace Anthony Gordon did vs Tottenham to alert Fabio Paratici to transfer opportunity

It's perhaps no surprise to see why Everton youngster Anthony Gordon has come to the attention of Fabio Paratici after a standout year at Goodison Park. Already linked with a summer move for Toffees ace Richarlison, football.london understands that Tottenham are looking at the possibility of bringing Gordon to the club and could look at signing both the England U21 international and his teammate.

Making seven appearances for Everton in the 2020/21 campaign before finishing the year on loan in the Championship with Preston North End, last season was a real breakthrough season for the 21-year-old as he became a regular in the starting XI. Making life incredibly difficult for his opponents due to his pace and trickery down the wing, Gordon's commitment to his boyhood club was there for all to see and he also chipped in with four goals and three assists in his 40 games in all competitions.

Only heading in one direction after Christmas with their poor form sending them tumbling down the league standings, Gordon was doing everything in his power to keep the Toffees in the Premier League. Heading to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium at the start of March, Everton suffered a 5-0 humiliation and it could possibly have been more as Antonio Conte's men ran riot.

Frank Lampard's side were so poor that evening as Tottenham made light work of them but Gordon was the one shining light for the Toffees as the rest of his teammates really struggled. Taking the game to Spurs when he did have the ball, the England U21 international also played his part defensively as he tried to help out Seamus Coleman.

That was evident in the opening stages of the game as he raced back and nicked the ball off Son Heung-min just as the South Korean was about to get his shot away after Harry Kane had played him in. Making four successful tackles in the match, Gordon also recorded two key passes and four successful dribbles as well as winning his side four free-kicks.

Thirteen of Everton's 14 players scored less than five out of ten in Liverpool Echo's player ratings that evening, with Gordon their highest-rated player. He earned a six with the review: "Possibly the only member of the visiting team who could come away with any sense of satisfaction from his efforts. Plenty of energy and drive, he got back to make a crucial block early on as Son was about to shoot but it proved a temporary reprieve."

Lampard had very little to say to give Everton fans hope after that performance but he did mention Gordon's showing when speaking to the BBC (via The Mirror) and also in his post-match press conference.

"Anthony Gordon was our standout player because of his attitude and quality," the Everton boss said after the 5-0 drubbing. "Some other performances were not up to scratch. I won’t name names. Today the team issue was we weren’t good enough."

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Lampard said: “The important thing is that the positivity stays [within the Club]. Not stupid positivity, there are no positives tonight, apart from Anthony Gordon, and a couple of performances of credit in terms of people who didn’t give up. That should be the bare minimum and I will demand that.”

Taking his seat by the Tottenham dugout as usual, Paratici will have been very impressed by Gordon's performance and his never-say-die attitude and his ability when on the ball will have caught his eye. It's one display that seems to have made a lasting impression as well with Tottenham now interested in a deal for the highly-rated winger as the managing director of football looks to build a successful team for Conte.
