Twenty dollars doesn’t buy nearly as much at the grocery store as it once did, but choosing where to shop can still make a noticeable difference. Dollar Tree attracts budget-conscious shoppers with low starting prices, while Aldi competes with inexpensive private-label groceries and larger packages of everyday staples. Both stores promise value, but which one actually stretches a $20 grocery budget further?
We examined advertised online prices available in October 2026, focusing on pantry staples and inexpensive foods that can be used for multiple meals. Rather than assuming everything at Dollar Tree costs $1.25 or that Aldi always has the lowest prices, we looked at actual product examples, package sizes, and how shoppers could use their money. The results suggest Aldi is often the better starting point for a basic grocery haul, although Dollar Tree can offer competitive deals on certain products.
