What did Mike Tindall get medals for? Rugby star's appearance sparks questions

Members of the Royal family have been leading the nation in mourning the death of the Queen, taking the chief role in ceremonies leading up to the historic state funeral today (Monday, September 19). One of the late monarch's relatives who has been seen frequently is Mike Tindall - the former rugby player married to Zara, Princess Anne's daughter.

Anne, along with her siblings including King Charles and Prince Edward, has been wearing military uniform during the national period of mourning. And Mike has been spotted wearing military-style medals on his jacket too, GloucestershireLive reports.

The medals have prompted speculation on social media, as Tindall did not serve in the forces. Twitter user David Laird was among the people with questions, asking: "Mike Tindall - what did he get his medals for?"

Meanwhile Mariana M added: "Sorry but why was Mike Tindall wearing medals? None of the relate to military service as he never served."

According to OK!, one of the medals is related to Tindall being an MBE. He was awarded the honour in 2007 for his services to sport - the medal looks like a cross and has a red band ribbon.

During his rugby career, centre Tindall played 75 times for England, scoring 14 tries, and was a key member of the 2003 World Cup winning team. He played his club rugby for Bath and Gloucester during a 17-year career.

The other two medals are related to jubilees for the Queen. The first was given to Tindall, who married Zara in 2011, and other members of the royal family as part of Her Majesty's Diamond Jubilee celebrations in 2012.

The other was given to the 43-year-old earlier this year as the Queen marked her Platinum Jubilee. Both Jubilee-related medals have similar designs but with different bands and dates on to correspondent with the anniversaries.

Tindall lives with Zara and their three children in Gloucestershire's Gatcombe Park, near Minchinhampton, which is the country resident of his mother-in-law the Princess Royal. He was also spotted wearing his medals earlier this year during a thanksgiving service at St Paul's Cathedral during the Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
