What Crystal Palace forward Jordan Ayew did as Ghana defeat South Korea in World Cup thriller

Crystal Palace winger Jordan Ayew played a big part in Ghana’s World Cup win against South Korea.

After an unlucky 3-2 loss against Portugal in their opener, the Black Stars got off the mark in Group H after another five-goal thriller. South Korea scored two goals in three minutes to draw level after Southampton’s Mohammed Salisu and Ajax midfielder Mohammed Kudus put Ghana two goals ahead.

However, Kudus would secure all three points after scoring his second goal of the game in the 68th minute. Jordan Ayew replaced his brother Andre to play only 13 minutes of the opener against Portugal but was included in the starting XI against South Korea. The Palace winger was involved in the build-up to all three goals.

For the opener, Ayew’s free-kick into the six-yard box was not cleared by the opposition, with Salisu on hand to hook the ball in. Ayew got an assist for the second goal, whipping in a cross that Kudus headed in to put Ghana 2-0 up at half-time.

South Korea staged a tremendous comeback in the second-half after a three-minute brace from Cho Gue-Sung. But Ghana were back in front seven minutes later, with Ayew starting the move on the left-flank that led to the cross that fell at the feet of Kudus to score his second goal and make it 3-2.

Ghana’s win puts them second in Group H ahead of the clash between leaders Portugal and third-placed Uruguay tonight. The Black Stars play their final group game against Uruguay on Friday, December 2, at 3pm.
