Buying a home can turn a monthly housing payment into a much bigger financial puzzle than many new homeowners expect. Mortgage delinquency can start with something as obvious as losing a job, but it can also grow from less dramatic problems such as an insurance increase, a property tax adjustment, an expensive repair, or simply underestimating how much the house costs to run.
That matters because the mortgage payment shown during the home-buying process does not always tell the whole story of future housing costs. Principal and interest may stay steady on a fixed-rate loan, while taxes, insurance, and other expenses can move in a very different direction.
