The Basic Mechanism: What Alternating Temperatures Actually Do
Cold water causes blood vessels to constrict. Hot water causes them to dilate. When you alternate between the two in rapid succession, you create a pumping effect in the circulatory system, vessels expanding and contracting rhythmically, pushing blood and lymphatic fluid through tissue that would otherwise sit stagnant after hard exercise.
