What B&M actually stands for - and it's nothing to do with bargains

B&M, there's probably a store near to you and it's a hotspot with shoppers looking to save a bit of cash. The store's products have become a bit of a mainstay in households up and down Britain.

But many people are often left scratching their heads as to what the initials stand for. With the store becoming such a huge brand, the name can simply become so etched into your memory that you cannot imagine them having a different title, reports the Mirror.

However, that's rarely the case, and a name tends to tell us the story behind the store. And that is especially the case when it comes to B&M.

Many shoppers often think it stands for Bargains and More, or even Bargains Madness, a nod to the store's low prices. But this appears to be somewhat of a Mandela effect.

Because the original name of the store appears to have come from its founder. The actual name stands for Billington & Mayman after the founder of the chain Malcolm Billington and Mayman, a partner in the store.

The store was initially founded in 1978 but it did not get off to the best of starts. Until their current owner, Cambridge law graduate Simon Arora, bought them in 2004 and turned it into a huge chain worth billions. In 2018, Mr Arora announced his intentions to make B&M the equivalent of Aldi and Lidl in the home store world - he wanted to make them a staple chain for anyone's furniture needs.

This is not the only time in recent weeks when a store has had its true name uncovered. ASOS is another which has quite the story behind its own name.

Unlike B&M, ASOS does not relate to the founders of the huge online store but to their original selling point which was that they sold clothes As Seen On Screen, so people could look like the celebrities they saw on the telly.
