What are the symptoms of swine flu as H1N1 cases rise?

  • Delhi has recorded 1,449 H1N1 swine flu cases as of 12 August, representing a more than six-fold increase compared to the 229 cases reported during the corresponding period last year.
  • Surges in influenza A infections have also been reported across other major Indian cities including Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai, with paediatricians in Bengaluru warning of cases progressing to pneumonia and respiratory distress in children.
  • Medical experts advise that while initial symptoms mirror a common cold, H1N1 typically presents with a sudden high-grade fever, severe body aches, extreme fatigue, persistent coughing and occasionally gastrointestinal issues.
  • Doctors urge patients to seek prompt medical attention if they display severe warning signs such as difficulty breathing, falling oxygen levels, persistent chest pain, severe dehydration, or confusion.
  • Individuals at highest risk of severe illness or respiratory failure include young children, pregnant women, the elderly, and people with pre-existing conditions like diabetes, heart disease, or compromised immunity.
