What are Labour’s Brexit red lines and will Burnham stick to them?

  • Prime minister Andy Burnham has committed to maintaining Labour 's Brexit red lines, with Downing Street confirming that the UK will not rejoin the European Union , the single market, the customs union or restore freedom of movement.
  • Despite Downing Street upholding these boundaries, Mr Burnham suggested during a visit to Ukraine that he intends to adopt a bolder approach than his predecessor to forge closer ties with European partners.
  • Liberal Democrat spokesperson Al Pinkerton criticised the prime minister for caving at the first hurdle by adhering to self-imposed barriers, while European Movement UK urged him to consider promising EU accession in the next manifesto.
  • The ongoing debate over the UK's relationship with the EU follows recent research from Frontier Economics suggesting that reintegration could recover up to 90 per cent of the economic damage caused by Brexit.
  • Former Conservative minister Nick Boles has urged Mr Burnham to strike a deal to re-enter the single market, arguing that doing so would provide a major economic boost and help build a lasting political legacy.
